Over the past two months or so, a novel coronavirus known as COVID-19 that emerged in the Hubei province of China has spread across the globe. In response, national governments and other authorities have begun to introduce measures to contain and/or slow this spread. Some of these measures—including a prohibition on large gatherings—have naturally affected spectator sports, including football.

Just like the new European Champions Portugal, Football Supporters Europe can announce that the Fans’ Embassies teams can look back at their most successful tournament in history: fan volunteers from 19 participating countries were in operation to guide travelling fans through all stages of EURO 2016. At the same time, a critical evaluation of the security concepts at the tournament is due. (
